Destructamatic was an auto-destructing/constructing sculptural performance. It is the ultimate homemade gadget, a towering contraption composed of plywood, discarded exercise equipment, found junk, dismembered bicycles and one small pot of canned soup. In a once in a lifetime event, this ephemeral and unpredictable sculpture was brought to life, clashing, clinking and ultimately self-destructing before an audience. At the conclusion, viewers were warmly encouraged to step forward and take a fragment as souvenir.
Destructamatic is a tribute to the work of Swiss sculptor Jean Tinguley, a master of kinetic sculpture and the pioneer of auto-destructive performance sculpture.
Destructamatic was designed and constructed by Tom Buckland and Kon Kudo for the opening of the Contour 556 festival in Canberra October 2018. Many thanks to support and assistance from Georgia Martin, Josh Owen, Jordan Evans-Tse and Emma Beer. Thank you to Tuggeranong Arts Centre, Artillion Studios and ANUSOAD Sculpture workshop for the lending of equipment.
